Proposed New Seating for McKellar Park

21 08 2014

A note from neighbourhood volunteers on a seating project for McKellar Park

To the McKellar Park Community,

Ten years ago, the community rallied with its first McKellar Park Fall Festival to raise funds for the Park’s newly constructed play structure.  Eight subsequent Fall Festivals raised an additional $14,000.

In the fall of 2011, in an effort to access the Cash-in-lieu of Parkland funds available to Kitchissippi Ward, an extensive community effort was undertaken by McKellar Park stakeholders, immediate neighbours and the broader community to examine potential park enhancements.  Included in the recommendations for park enhancements was an identified need for additional seating that would meet the objectives of a fully accessible and age-friendly park.

While the proposal for McKellar Park was not successful under that process, the McKellar Park Community Association supported a proposal in May, 2014, to request a community initiative to have additional seating in McKellar Park. The seating will be funded by the $14,000 raised from the fall festivals together with a City of Ottawa Minor Capital grant of $7,500.  The seating project is being proposed for completion in the fall of 2014.

– a seating arrangement of an accessible bench and a standard bench

– a stone dust path connecting the seating with the hard surface surrounding the McKellar Park Community Building (Field House)

– approximately eight (8) feature boulders for additional seating located on the west side of the Park between the existing play structure and the ball diamond fencing

A copy of the City’s proposed location and layout of the seating is attached.  The project is scheduled to begin in September, 2014.
