Help sponsor a refugee family

3 02 2016

The Association received this message from a group of local residents, inviting help with sponsoring a refugee family:

Dear McKellar Park Residents,

I am part of a newly formed community group, Ottawa Embraces, working towards sponsoring a Syrian refugee family to come to Canada. I thought I would reach out to you all to see if any of you are interested in participating in this initiative. Our group is made up of several members from McKellar Park/Westboro, Lowertown, and Ottawa West – you will most likely know someone who is already part of this group.

If you are already part of a similar group (there are several around) or just not interested, then no worries at all – it is not for everyone! If you are interested, then here are more details:

The overall process takes many months, and our group is responsible for the needs of the family for one year. We are working with Jewish Family Services who will be our “sponsorship agreement holder”. After this one year the goal is for the family to be self-sufficient. Some of our group responsibilities include:

– fundraising
– finding and furnishing affordable housing
– orienting the family to the community, driving to appointments
– assisting with OHIP, banking, budgeting
– helping find employment
– arranging school and daycare
– etc.

Approximately $30K is required to support a family of 5 for a year, so raising funds is important. Our group has already raised $12K, which is great! Fraser Avenue has a group of 100+ neighbours and friends (group members includes any financial donor and time contribution). They have been matched with a family who is soon to arrive and have enough financial contributions that they are considering sponsoring a second family. This is incredibly inspiring and a true testament that it really does take a village!

For anyone wishing to make a financial contribution, we are now taking confidential pledges. When we get the green light to move forward with our Memorandum of Agreement from Jewish Family Services (JFS) we will reach out to anyone who made a pledge and advise how to make the actual donation through JFS. A tax receipt will be issued for any donation over $25. Please click here to review the pledge form for details of how you can contribute.

Please know that any contribution of time or any financial donation would be welcome — no amount is too small.

If you are interested in getting involved in any way, large or small, please let me know.

Hope you’ll consider jumping on board for this incredible journey.

We encourage you to review the pledge form for more information, and consider contributing to this local initiative.
